As a former long-time resident, I can say that the words "Charlotte" and "history" are rarely seen or heard in the same sentence. Just like Atlanta about 30 years ago, Charlotte is consumed with its newness and its incredible prosperity. It's a conservative, clean, and dynamic city. This concise history resembles the city in many ways.At the turn of the previous century, way back in 1900, North Carolina had not one city with a population as much as 25,000 people, yet Charlotte has existed as a German and Scots-Irish crossroads and important market stop since the 1750s. It remained a small village for almost 150 years, where historic events far out of proportion to their physical size took place. Those important events, such as the founding of Queens College, the drafting of the Mecklenburg Resolves and the Gold Rush of 1837, are treated with a skilled hand in this book.Things started to gather momentum in the 1920s, as Charlotte eclipsed both Wilmington and Winston-Salem to become North Carolina's metropolis. Each chapter focuses on either a critical event or period which contributed most to the city we see today. Eventually, Charlotte will not only look forward and up [at all those new skyscapers], but also backward and down, into a history and built environment that needs to be preserved. This book does justice to that concept. The book is quite summary, as you can imagine, but it really reads pretty well. The narrative style is smooth and easy, and never slips into textbook monotony. Some chapters are dedicated to Charlotte placed within its larger geographic context, in Mecklenburg County and in the North Carolina piedmont, which makes for interesting reading as well. There are many black & white photographs throughout. This book was well written and very readable! Since I was born and raised in Charlotte, I found it so very interesting. I found out the History about many places I knew and how Charlotte became a Town. The book includes many pictures of the sites that are written about plus I even gave it to my son to read! I would Highly Recommend it to anyone from Charlotte,NC or interested in the History of Charlotte!
